SASSA is an abbreviation for the South African Social Security Agency. It was established in 2005. This is an agency responsible for the distribution of social grants to South Africans who are in dire need of it. They do this on behalf of the Department of Social Development.

The grants may include Care Dependency Grant, Child Support Grant, Disability Grant, Foster Child Grant, Grant-In-Aid, Older Persons Grant, Social Relief of Distress, War Veterans Grant, and Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant.

What Is The Mandate of SASSA?

The core mandate of SASSA is to see to it that there is the provision of comprehensive social security services that will fight against any form of vulnerability and poverty in the constitutional and legislative framework.

What Are The Minimum Requirements For SASSA Grant?

With SASSA grants, there are several requirements one needs to meet before considering the Grant. We will discuss each type of Grant and its minimum requirements. Meanwhile, here is a minimum requirement for any SASSA Grant.

  • First and most importantly, you have to be a South African citizen, have a permanent residence or a refugee
  • You cannot be on more than one Grant
  • You don’t have to be cared for by a state institution
  • Your earnings must be between R78,120 if you are single and R156,240 if you are married
  • Your assets must sum up to R1,115,400 if you are single and R2, 230, 800 if you are married

Types of SASSA Grants And Their Minimum Requirements

By far, there are seven SASSA Grants. They are;

  • Older person’s grants (old-age pension)
  • Child support grant
  • Care dependency grant
  • Grant in aid
  • War veteran’s Grant.
  • Foster child grant.
  • Disability grant.

1. Older Person’s Grant

the older person’s Grant is more or less a pension for older people. The beneficiaries are mostly older people who are 60 years old and above.

Requirements

  • You should be a South African citizen or permanent residence or a refugee
  • You have to be 60 years old or above
  • Once you have this Grant, you will not receive any other social grant
  • Yourself and your spouse, if any, must comply with the means test
  • You should not be in a state institution for care

2. Child Support Grant

this Grant is offered to parents in dire need of money to support their children. The Grant dishes out to such families, and the child here must not be over 18 years old.

Requirements

  • The applicant needs to be the basic or primary caretaker of the child
  • You should be a South African citizen or permanent residence or a refugee
  • The applicant and the child both need to reside in South Africa
  • The child in question should be below 18 years
  • The applicant and their spouse, if any, must comply with the means test
  • The child should not be in a state institution for care

3. Care Dependency Grant

this Grant dishes out to children who are severely disabled to the extent that they will need full-time care and special care.

Requirements

  • The applicant needs to be a South African citizen or permanent residence or a refugee
  • Both the applicant and the child need to be South African residents
  • The child needs to be below 18 years
  • The applicant must submit the medical records of the child that proves she requires the care
  • The applicant and their spouse, if any, must comply with the means test unless in a case where you are foster parents

4. Disability Grant

This Grant is for people who cannot work permanently. The applicant must be in the state for more than six months before applying.

Requirements

  • The applicant must be a South African national, permanent resident, or a refugee
  • The applicant must be between the ages of 18 and 59 years old
  • A medical record is submitted to prove that the applicant is sick indeed
  • The applicant and their spouse, if any must comply with the means
  • The applicant’s medical records must be more than three months old
  • The applicant should not be in any state care home

5. Foster Child Grant

this Grant provides for children in the foster care system. The money is paid to the foster parents of these children.

Requirements

  • The applicant needs to be the foster parent of the child
  • The child and the foster parent need to be South African citizens, have a permanent residence, or must be a refugee
  • The child will have to be in the care of the foster parents

6. Grant Aid-Grant

This comes in the form of a scholarship or tuition. It reduces the fees the student has to pay to attend college.

7. War Veteran Grant

This Grant dishes out to veteran soldiers and retirees who fought in the second world war.

SASSA Payment Dates

The disability grant is paid on the 4th day of every month, all other grants are paid from the 5th of every month.

  • Older Persons- 3rd June 2022

How do I Check My SASSA R350 Payment Dates?

SASSA grants are paid every month. To check if you have been paid or the dates you will be paid, follow these steps;

  • Visit this link to get to your personal SASSA profile https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status
  • Once there, key in your South African ID number with the number you used when submitting your forms as the password
  • Press submit and wait for the response almost immediately

How Does SASSA Pay R350?

The SASSA R350 Grant is paid either at Checkers, USave, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, or the Boxter store. The SASSA R350 grant is for social relief distress, and since the requirements have changed, only those qualified will enjoy the benefits that come with it.

Will There Be Increment In SASSA Grant in 2022?

During the reading of the 2022 budget, the national treasurer revealed that there would be an increment in the country’s total number of people who benefit from grants. This means that there equally will be an increment in the percentages of the grants.

Old-Age and care dependency grant will receive a 5% increment, while the Foster Care grant will have a 1.9 % increment with Child Support at 4.3%. 

When Is SASSA R350 Grant Ending?

It was revealed in February during the state of the nation address that the SASSA R350 grant will not end this 2022. According to the president, it will be extended to 2023. In other words, it will end in March 2023.
